Homosexuality in Islam – Definition, causes and treatment

Homosexuality in Islam

Homosexuality in Islam is one of the pivotal issues that have recently become common and has become the talk of the hour, and Muslims have turned to their religion and adhered to it to pass this ordeal safely, and the first step out of this scourge was to guide children from a young age, instill good values in them, and teach them the principles of their religion, and in this article, we explain what homosexuality is in Islam and how to protect the child from it.

The concept of homosexuality in Islam

The definition of homosexuality in Islam is the sexual attraction directed towards individuals of the same sex, which contradicts the moral and legal principles that govern sexual relationships in Islam. Homosexuality is considered forbidden (haram) in Islam and a deviation from the natural order that Allah has created for humanity.

Islamic law prohibits sexual relations outside of marriage, and same-sex relationships are considered contrary to Islamic morals and a major sin. Therefore, homosexuality is considered forbidden in Islam and conflicts with the values and religious principles that govern sexual relationships in Islam.

Causes of homosexuality in Islam

The causes of homosexuality in Islam are a matter of debate and discussion among scholars and religious leaders. While there is no clear consensus on the specific causes of homosexuality, many Islamic scholars and religious leaders believe that it is a deviation from the natural order created by Allah.

Some Islamic scholars argue that homosexuality is caused by environmental factors, such as upbringing, social surroundings, or cultural influence. Others believe that it is caused by psychological or emotional factors, such as trauma, abuse, or mental illness. Some also suggest that it may be caused by genetic or biological factors.

However, regardless of the perceived causes of homosexuality, most Islamic scholars and leaders agree that it is a sin and a violation of Islamic teachings. They believe that the focus should be on seeking treatment and guidance to overcome same-sex desires and align one’s actions with the principles of the faith.

What is lesbianism?

Lesbianism is a term used to describe a sexual orientation in which a woman is primarily emotionally, romantically, and/or sexually attracted to other women. A woman who identifies as a lesbian may prefer to form intimate relationships with other women and may not experience romantic or sexual attraction to men.

What is LGBTQ people?

LGBTQ is an acronym that stands for:

L – Lesbian
G – Gay

It refers to people whose sexual orientation or gender identity differs from traditional norms.

Reference to lesbianism and homosexuality in the Quran

One of the most relevant passages is found in Surah al-Araf, which reads:

“And [We had sent] Lot when he said to his people, “Do you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds? Indeed, you approach men with desire, instead of women. Rather, you are a transgressing people.”” – Quran 7:80-81

Here, Lot is condemning the men of his people for desiring other men instead of women. scholars interpret this as a condemnation of male homosexuality.

In another passage in Surah an-Nisa, the Quran speaks generally of those “who come with lustful desire to men instead of women”:
“And [also prohibited to you are all] married women except those your right hands possess. [This is] the decree of Allah upon you. And lawful to you are [all others] beyond these, [provided] that you seek them [in marriage] with [gifts from] your property, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse…” – Quran 4:24

Again, scholars interpret this as a condemnation of homosexuality

Why does Islam forbid lesbianism and sodomy?

Islam prohibits same-sex relations for a few key reasons:

1- Preservation of lineage

Islam places a strong emphasis on marriage and family. Same-sex relations do not produce biological children, which was important for preserving family lineages in past generations.

2- Adhering to divine command

Muslims believe that Allah has decreed that intimate relations are only permissible between a man and a woman within marriage. Engaging in same-sex relations would disobey this command.

3- Preventing moral corruption

Some Muslim scholars argue that same-sex relations promote moral corruption and undermine societal norms of sexuality and gender roles. They believe this would lead to chaos.

4- Conformity to “fitrah”

Fitrah refers to man’s innate, natural disposition as created by Allah. Some scholars argue that since men and women were “created in pairs” (Quran 78:8), same-sex relations go against human nature and fitrah.

5- Avoiding lust

The Quran warns against following one’s lustful desires. Same-sex relations are seen as a manifestation of forbidden lust that must be controlled. Muslims are called to restrain their desires and channel intimate feelings only within marriage.

6- Focusing intimacy on reproduction

Some Islamic scholars argue that the primary purpose of intimacy is reproduction, so non-reproductive sexual acts – including same-sex relations – go against this purpose.
